TGCWC12: This Is Our God

This past weekend was rich, encouraging, and memorable, as I was blessed to attend The Gospel Coalition Women's Conference in Orlando, Florida.  It was rainy and overcast for most of the weekend, but that did not put a damper on the gospel-focused teaching, the soul-stirring worship music, and the inevitable fellowship that happens when over 3,000 women who love Jesus assemble in one place. TGC brought together a long list of well-known pastors and Bible teachers to help the ladies who came to grow in awe and worship of our great God. And from the feedback that I've seen, I would say...mission accomplished!

What I will remember most from the weekend:

*The overwhelming feeling of standing with all those ladies, led by the music of Keith and Kristin Getty, to sing with our whole hearts to the Lord.  The words to all of their songs are deep with meaning, and moved us to worship. I especially loved it when Kristin Getty stepped to the microphone to read a passage of scripture between songs. Her Northern Irish accent was unmistakable, especially when she pronounced the word  "awake" as "uh-wek".  :- )

*Sitting on the very front row for the pre-conference sermon from John Piper called The Search for Joy and the Supremacy of God in the Gospel. In his trademark passionate manner, Piper outlined 7 obstacles that the blood of Jesus obliterates to clear the way for us to come to Him and fully enjoy, savor, and treasure the person and work of Jesus Christ. I have greatly appreciated his books over the years, so it was a treat to finally hear him preach in person.  There were many wonderful speakers there for the weekend, but Piper's two sessions were my favorite.

*The sight of hundreds of human bodies flowing out of the ginormous ballroom where the plenary sessions were held, and up the escalators in one fluid motion like a river, when it was lunch time...

*The exhortation from one of Don Carson's sermons to rejoice when counted worthy to suffer for the name of Jesus, because it is truly a privilege.

*Listening to the collective wisdom of three pastors wives who were interviewed in a focus gathering session. They talked about the joys and challenges of marriage to a pastor, and the blessings of the full-time ministry life, serving Christ and His church. Very near and dear to my heart, and I was encouraged by the positive, hopeful manner in which these ladies spoke of their ministry experiences.

*The genuineness of Carolyn Mahaney words as she described a dear family friend and her faithful testimony of trusting God through painful trials. Her talk was listed in our program as The Snare of Compare, and she subtitled it at the start of her session as "What to do about things you can do nothing about". She walked us through John 21, where Christ gives Peter the double exhortation to follow him, though that passage also includes an allusion to Peter's eventual death by crucifixion, and a rebuke to not compare his life to what is chosen for his fellow disciple John. "What is that to you?"  I went away thankful for the reminder that every unwanted circumstance is assigned to us by God himself and it is all an opportunity to bring Him glory.

*Finally, I will remember the sweet fellowship with the ladies there.  Four of my friends from our former church in California met me there, and that reunion was lovely! It was wonderful to catch up, share prayer requests, eat chocolate, and be encouraged together. But it also made me so happy to meet women in my Christian family that I didn't know before.  There is a mysterious instant bond when two believers meet, and I  am so looking forward to cultivating new friendships.

It was an encouraging, stimulating weekend, and I am already beginning to think toward the next TGCWC. I wonder who I can bring with me next time. :-D

Happy Father's Day, Mr. Wonderful!

A holiday like Father's Day always leaves me feeling a bit frustrated in my attempt to honor my husband, Brian. There are so many things I could try to write to express how grateful I am for the ways God has used him in my life and in the lives of our children.  His impact for good has been so great, and my words seem to just fall short.  But, that won't stop me from trying.

Above all, I am grateful to God for Brian's gracious and patient love for our children.  It is quite convicting to live with at times, actually, but I am so thankful that Brian has modeled love in this way. I have seen him  many times patiently listen to one of our children, though a long day had already left him exhausted, to truly find out their need and how to best help them.  He has taken time to show that he cares more about loving them than pleasing himself, or simply not being bothered by the necessary work to find resolution.  And while I know he would remind me that he hasn't done this perfectly, God's grace has prevailed and produced a sweet relationship between him and all of our children, as a result.  I am so thankful that Brian has tried to keep his mind focused on the undeserved love and forgiveness of Christ in his own life, and that has made him humble and gracious toward others, especially toward our children.  He has loved them sacrificially and generously, and I have been thankful for this example, especially at times when I was worn out and needed to be reminded that we must love our children whether we think they deserve it at any given moment or not.

Happy Father's Day, Mr. Wonderful! I am so thankful for you!

Re-Post: Drowning

As someone who may potentially own a swimming pool soon, I found this article very interesting.

Vacation Mode

Sometimes shifting my mind into vacation mode gets me into trouble. If I selfishly expect vacation to allow me to clock out and not serve or give or fulfill responsibilities, even though my family is still here needing love and care, then I am setting myself up to feel very frustrated!
So I have to take a step back and remind myself that on any given day that I am alive, I belong to the Lord Jesus and He says, "do nothing from selfishness." I have been given life to live for Him and to serve and love Him by serving and loving all those around me. How liberating to deny myself for Jesus' sake and give as He has given to me! After all, He died for me, so I could live for Him.
So, clocking back in now..... :-)

Praying for Japan

Yesterday we watched the aerial video images that were captured as the tsunami swept over Japan. The scenes of overwhelming destruction were horrifying and seemed surreal. We could see cars trying to outrun the oncoming waves behind them, only to be overtaken by another wave that came from a different direction. Real people were dying as the camera continued recording. It broke our hearts for the people of Japan. Finally, our 9 year old son said quietly, "I guess God wants everyone to know how powerful He is."

The devastation we witnessed made us pray for the people in Japan, that God would use this catastrophic event to bring many souls to salvation. Thousands have died, but for the people who have survived I am praying that their eyes will be opened to their great need for a Savior. The mighty God who can unleash an unstoppable wave of death is the same God who tenderly offered His only precious Son to die a hideous death on the cross, so that people in Japan can cry out to Him and be saved.

I found a fascinating passage in Ezekiel 33:11 this morning. It is a message of hope and comfort to anyone, but my thoughts are on the Japanese as I read these words of the Lord: "Say to them, 'As I live!' declares the Lord GOD, 'I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn back, turn back from your evil ways!'"

There is a very moving prayer for the people of Japan by John Piper on the Desiring God blog this morning. Click here to read it.

Forward

Wise words to live by for a new year, and every day of every year to come:
"Only one life, twill soon be past.Only what's done for Christ will last."

My prayer for the new year:"Lord, let 2011 be a year that I live with joy and resolve toward great service, all because Christ is my all-satisfying treasure, and He is worthy of all I can give."

Happy New Year!

Goodbye, Summer

I always feel a bit sad when August winds down, and the busy preparations for the coming school year take the place of vacation days with no pressing schedule. I look back at the ambitious list of projects that I intended to do this summer, and laugh. The list remains undone, because more important things, like playing with my children and giving them a fun summer, took precedence. Oh, well.
One day my busy household will be quiet and the children will probably be grown and gone. I don't yearn for that day, though the days now can be tiring and long at times. But I am committed to enjoy this time now, as these days will pass, and can never be retrieved. Maybe then I will get the garage cleaned out. Who knows.
