Answered Prayers On A Happy Day

It is Sunday night, and we are feeling so happy and blessed! After weeks of looking at many cars, we have become a Honda family! We now own two Honda Odyssey minivans, a gold 2007 Touring edition, that came with all the perks, and a 1999 blueish-gray simpler model, but clean and sturdy. We were also able to purchase a black 1999 Accord, and with 5 drivers and two more in the next year or so, it is nice to have at least 3 vehicles. We are so thankful for God's faithful provision through selling our other cars before we moved, and making it possible to get these after we arrived.

Another happy note today, Brian started preaching a new series in Revelation! I am so blessed to be under his teaching full-time again, and love watching how God is already using him. Tonight we returned a borrowed car to the older couple who have been loaning it to us since we got here. It was so wonderful to be invited into their home, and hear the testimony of how God saved them both. The husband has been battling cancer for a long time and it was invigorating to listen to him describe with joy how wonderful it is to know that he is accepted by Jesus Christ and has no fear of dying, but is looking forward to heaven. It was so encouraging!!

Our First Week

Today is Saturday, and we are hopefully making our first trip to the beach today!

We have had a wonderful first week here. Our arrival was met with so many acts of kindness by our new church family. A team of ladies cleaned the place we are staying, which is usually a mission house, then they stocked the fridge and pantry with tons of food for us. The church secretary had contacted Savannah via FB and found out what our favorite foods and snacks were, then they provided meals for us through the first weekend. Also a team of men came to unload our container on that first Friday, then some of them helped set up beds and get things in place and also helped take the things that we don't have room for down the street to the storage unit we are using.

There was fellowship right away when we arrived. The very first night was a family roller skating night that some of the families go to, and we stopped by there and our children were able to meet some friends and break the ice. Then people stopped in at different times over the first weekend to drop off food, etc, and we went to one family's home on Saturday, so by the first Sunday, our kids were all sitting with new friends during the worship service, smiling and talking and connecting. So by the first Sunday night we had some high school and college aged students around our dinner table laughing loud and playing games until about midnight. What a huge answered prayer!!!

Monday came and we had to start homeschool back, since we had taken so many days off in December and January. Brian went to the church for his first days at work, and came home the very first day praising God for the godly men that he gets to work with here. God has been so kind to provide a church that already has three other elders in place, an associate pastor, a building, and for the first time ever, Brian has a secretary!!! They have given him a large office and are busy painting it and outfitting it with shelves for his library.

The people here are warm and welcoming, and so expressive in their joy that we are finally here. Another blessing!! They also hug people. That makes us feel at home. :-D Still more blessings from the Lord!

Whew!

I have learned something about myself. I am not very good at blogging when my mind and time is consumed with something that I have to do. Take the last 6 months for example. From the time we made our first visit to Florida last August, the wheels were set in motion for a half year process that resulted in leaving our home, making a cross-country move, visiting family, and now preparing our hearts to settle into a new life in a new place. Whew! To say that it was all-consuming- (oh yeah, and homeschooling needed to go on as normal) would not do justice to how fixed my mind was on what was happening. So, there was little time to sit down and do any creative writing here.

But today is a new day.

I woke up today and had nothing that I had to do. That put me in a fog. When is that ever the
case with my crazy, busy life? We are staying with grandparents, and their home is warm and relaxing and restful. It only took me a few minutes to realize that a day to rest was the perfect gift for God to give me today. All the changes we’ve been through lately, (though they are an incredible answer to our prayers of many years,) have made us physically and emotionally tired. It is a very satisfying, joyful exhaustion, probably like the way a farmer feels when the crop is all safely gathered in, but exhaustion nonetheless. So we are resting.

I'll Love You Forever!

Dear Brian,

(The following is a love note I wrote on Valentine's Day 2008, but it bears repeating to remind you of some of the reasons I love you today, on our 23rd wedding anniversary.)

Valentine's Day twenty years ago is a day that still stands out in my mind even after all these years. We were on the beautiful tropical island of Guam where we had met a few months before. It was a Sunday afternoon and we had enjoyed lunch together. A few days before that you had announced to me that you loved me, and wanted to commmit yourself to loving me for the rest of my life! Such honesty and, forgive the term, *purpose-driven dating* was quite new to me and I was surprised by your forthrightness! And yet, in the five months that I had known you I had come to recognize this as characteristic of your life. You are still the most clear thinking and articulate person I have ever met!

So, I had been mulling your declaration over and over in my mind and the question that I asked you that Valentine's Day was, "How do you know that I am the one?" Your reply was that biblical love is a commitment made once the whole person had been objectively evaluated, good and bad, and based on everything that you knew about me, you were ready to make that commitment! Well, it only took a few minutes to let you know that my secret list of all I had prayed for in "Mr. Wonderful" had already been checked off as I had gotten to know you, and if it really was that clear and simple, then, wow!... "I love you, too!"

That was a nice start, and you have been teaching me about Biblical love for 20 years now in many ways....

I love how you are so committed to teaching me and our children the Word of God. You continue on reading the Bible to us, taking the interruptions and distractions in stride, and looking forward in faith to the great things that God will do with His word in our lives. I also love how you constantly talk to us about what you are studying and learning.

I love how you show that you are thinking about me even when we are apart. When you call me just to check in and offer an encouraging word to press on, or show up with my favorite dark chocolate treat, you are saying, “You are on my mind!”

I love how you joyfully shoulder the responsibility of being Dad to our eight children. I know that it is a great task and no one is able to do it to God’s glory without His enabling. And so you have continued to ask for strength and wisdom and God is using you greatly in the lives of all of our kids.

I love how you have set the example of dealing graciously with people. You have taught me so much about this through your example with our children. Often you have diffused a conflict or soothed an upset child by your gracious words and your humility that allows you to ask forgiveness and see their side.

I love how you have loved me enough to confront sin when you see it, and show me a more God-honoring way. Recently you pointed out that I needed to work on “sweetness of speech” with one of our children. Your admonition was needed and the loving way that you brought it to my attention made it easy to see that you were right. Thanks!

I love how integrity guides you. Your example of striving to do what is right (in little and big things) will be a great legacy for our children. I have told you often that it is quite convicting to live with you at times…and that is certainly to my great benefit!

I also love how willing you have always been to make sacrifices for our family. I am astounded and so grateful for the amount of time that you have given to lead our 14 year homeschool venture! Your leadership over this and actually overseeing the high school years has made this dream a reality.

Brian, I am so thankful for the opportunity to tell the world that you are a great gift of love, protection, wisdom, and blessing to me straight from the hand of the Lord. I am forever changed because of it.
